Editor Question & Answer

What was the driving force or motivation for starting Emerging Strategies for Public Education Reform?

Prof. Grant: I am always looking for ways to contribute to the research literature. When I was completing my dissertation many years ago, I was shocked at how dated a lot of the research was pertaining many of the hot issues in education: achievement gaps, disproportionality in special education, how to support English Language Learners.
What specific problems does the book addresses?
Prof. Grant: The book addresses those areas in education that are now at a critical stage. There’s a chapter on mental health support for students, curriculum development in marginalized communities, Crary and Gilblom explored culturally competent education…it’s really a comprehensive look at the many facets of schools. The book really could have been a heavier volume but we were in the beginning stages when the pandemic hit. Understandably, many contributors were not in a position to complete their chapters.

What do you think that publishing this book will change in your field of study?

Prof. Grant: One of the things I mentioned before is contributing to the literature. This book had contributions from knowledgeable practitioners in their respective fields, sharing what they know in hopes that it will help support change efforts. That’s really ideally what academics should aspire to do-advance their field of practice. There’s really no reason for their to be gaps in research that are 10 plus years.

How does your professional background support your ability to be the authority on this book?

Prof. Grant: I’ve been in education for 18 or 19 years. Because education was not an original career choice for me, I made it my business to learn everything I could. I researched and took classes and I developed core research interests, specifically special education, literacy, and achievement gaps among historically marginalized groups, but I could honestly write about a range of things. I’ve invested my time in writing articles, building curriculum, reading current literature, and creating professional development so that I am always involved in the field

Have you been recognized for an academic excellence or any other related achievement in this field?

Prof. Grant: I will say that I have accomplished exactly what I intended, and that is to contribute to the research literature. My work is ready all over the world, which is a huge accomplishment. I was also recognized for my excellence by the College of Education for my contributions to the field.

How diverse are the experts behind the research that went into the book?

Prof. Grant: The diversity of the experts is demonstrated by their research focus. One of my colleagues, Dr. Pam Epler, contributed a chapter called High Leverage Practices for All Students. She has an extensive background in special education and has written several books and articles on the issues we are seeing in special education and offers suggestions as to how we can work towards a resolution that will support our children with disabilities. Drs. Nadira Jack and M. Gail Hickey were contributors for my previous book, Equity, Equality and Reform in Contemporary Public Education. I was honored to have them for this project as well. Both are passionate about restructuring education in ways that will actually allow our children a greater chance for a academic success.
